11 Jan 2008 - The Chuck

Is it just me or do the years seem to be getting shorter?  2008 already!

Of course, John made the first BOB entry for the year.  I guess since his house is almost done, we’ll have to rz there and drink all his beer.

Wouldn’t it be interesting if eventually that was what the BOB did … had a reunion in different parts of the country to celebrate still being alive.  Maybe that would be better done when most of us are really retired, instead of just out of the Air Force.

James and Lynn have been on my mind since James’ father passed away.  I know from the experience of my mother’s passing in 2000 that you’re never really prepared for that sort of thing.  Fortunately time helps heal the sorrow.  Now, seven years later, I seldom find myself welling up over her memories.

I’m working as a SAIC contractor; a training manager for the 608 AOC.  It is nice to get a paycheck.  It helps fund things like my daughter moving into LSUS campus housing.

A budget that still has money left over at the end of the month is a nice thing to see.  My savings account dried up about the time I got this job, so that was very good timing, I don’t hear that giant sucking sound coming from the credit union anymore.

I wish I had great news to share about my book, God willing, maybe next month will be more revealing.

We had three active duty officers join our ranks since our last 11th: Steve, Ted, and Yak.  Maybe we can pry the latest gossip out of them.  If we do, remember that the BOB Blog is active on the Internet, thus people we don’t know or worse yet – we do know can read what we write.  The power we have over them is that we can write.  That is good indeed.

Doctrine Trivia Question of the Month

“It is a doctrine of war not to assume the enemy will not come, but rather to rely on one’s readiness to meet him; not to presume that he will not attack, but rather to make one’s self invincible.”

a. Napoleon
b. Clausewitz
c. Sun Tzu
d. Jomini

Bonus points if you can explain the concept.

You can put your answer in your post or as a comment to this post.

Here’s to wishing you all the best year of all the years ever with 2008.

  1. Jasper says:

That was that Napoleon. He said it when he was talking to Josephine about building the Magineaux Line. He thought it would be good to build an invincible line of forts between France and Germany to keep the Nazis out. It worked well beginning against the forces of Fredrick the Great, helped France to win the Franco-Prussian War, saved Paris during World War I, but finally failed at the opening frontal assaults of World War II, because Volkswagon had invented the Panther tank, and the Germans used them to roll over the forts while the French were having lunch with General Merlot. They couldn’t imagine the gall of the Germans to attack during lunch.

  2. The Chuck says:

That is so wrong! The correct answer is Sun Tzu.

However, I now offer a challenge to the BOB Blog to see who can find the most historic errors in Jasper’s piece of fiction concerning the assertions of Napoleon.
